‘Petro-coke’ setting forth its price competitiveness attracts high public interest as a affordable solution amid busy calls for survival, as a matter of life or death struggle for almost all the industry enterprises, facing the serious energy crisis due to the consistent cost rise of Bunker-C oil and LNG. The Seoul Sharp Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., an industry expert in the areas of desulfurization plant facility, energy related plants and environmental facilities, completed the construction of a petro-coke boiler system with 50 tons capacity, which is the largest in Korea within the KC plant of Daebul Industrial Complex, Yeongam, Jeollanam-do, Korea.

Park, Joo Bong, CEO of KC Business Group, announced at a ceremony held on 25th of last month, “The introduction of Petro-coke Boiler System at KC plant makes a fine example of partnership growth between large corporate and small & medium enterprise. Fuel cost saving taking advantage of low petro-coke price allows KC securing globalized competitiveness, which will surely lead to the national competitiveness.”

Park, Bong Kyun, President of SK Energy Co., Ltd. undertaking the petro-coke supply and boiler system operation said, “SK Energy was able to successfully completed the construction of Korea largest high pressure boiler of 50 tons capacity within short 10 month period leading to the subsequently promising operation thanks to the cooperation between the contractor and associated vendors. SK Energy is committed to advance to a total energy provider growing together with its customers taking advantage of differentiated operational knowledge.”

The KC, a sole manufacturer of aluminum hydroxide in Korea, is expected to achieve saving of KW12~14 billion, 60~70% of annual average energy cost of KW20 billion as a performance result obtained from the commercial operation of newly introduced petro-coke boiler since last June replacing the previously consumed fuels of Bunker-C oil and LNG with petroleum cokes.

The KC set off of introducing the petro-coke boiler system when they had to face the increased energy cost share rising from 15% of total manufacturing cost to 30% in recent 2~3 years. A concerned executive of KC explained that, “As of today KC uses petroleum cokes for 80% of total fuel consumption. We plan on replacing the entire fuel consumption to petroleum cokes 100% by re-investing the cost saving made.”

The Seoul Sharp Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. implementing the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) scope of work for the subject project has completed the development of 50-ton, 77kg/cm.g high pressure boiler system enjoying the successful commissioning and operation of 50-ton, 10kg/cm.g petro-coke boiler project which had been completed of construction by last 2009 at the facility of Hongwon Paper Manufacturing Co., Ltd. The said boiler system herein is provided with the burner, combustion chamber, boiler, air pre-heater, de-nitrification/wet desulfurization facilities.

Lee, Ho Il, Managing Director of SSHC claimed that, “We have completed the development and installation of the largest scale, highest pressure boiler system in Korea reinforcing the technical power accumulated from existing de-nitrification/desulfurization process, a primary business sector of SSHC, with newly developed petroleum cokes boiler technology. Now, the inquiries keep coming in consistently from those facilities consuming massive fuel cost such as paper manufacturing, foodstuff processing, chemical, steel mill and glass manufacturing (melting furnace) industries.”

‘Petro-coke’ is a fuel prepared in powder form by finely grinding the byproducts left over from the processes producing LPG, naphtha, kerosene oil and diesel oil by dissolving the residue oil obtained from crude oil refining process after going through the distillation. So far the ‘petro-coke’ has been either used as a raw material for asphalt or simply disposed through landfill. Recently the increasing trend of utilizing ‘petro-coke’ in Korea also as an energy source thanks to the cost lower than Bunker-C oil by 60~70%.
